Gluten Free Munich guide
Living in Munich for over five years, I’ve had plenty of time to explore the Munich gluten free food scene. From traditional Bavarian dishes like schnitzel and pretzels to gluten-free pizza, burgers, and even specialty shops, the city has quite a bit to offer.
Whether you’re a local with celiac disease (or gluten intolerance) or visiting Munich and looking for safe gluten-free spots, this guide is here to help. I’ve put together a list of restaurants, cafes, and stores where you can eat and shop without worrying about gluten.
Get ready to discover Munich’s gluten-free side (or as you would say in German, glutenfrei München) and enjoy the city’s food scene stress-free!

2. Gasthof Obermeier
Situated on the east side of Munich, this restaurant offers gluten-free Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn (a traditional dessert). Their website confirms it’s safe for celiacs.
3. Wirtshaus im Tutzinger Hof
A bit outside the city near the scenic Starnberger Lake in Tutzing, this restaurant lists gluten-free Schnitzel and burgers on its menu. I haven’t been yet, but it’s on my list for the summer.
Italian Restaurants

2. Vi vadi Rustico
Near Munich’s main train station, this Italian restaurant serves gluten-free pasta and pizza (for an extra charge), though the pizza is baked in a shared oven.

4. Osteria del Parco glutenfrei
Italian restaurant in the west side of the city. They offer gluten free pasta and pizza (though its made in a shared oven)

Gluten free pizza available, but not celiac safe!
Breakfast Places
1. California Bean
Located near Munich’s main train station, this brunch spot offers some gluten-free options, though it’s not entirely gluten-free.
2. Pancake am Tor
A pancake café near Sendlinger Tor offering gluten-free pancakes. I haven’t tried it yet, so I’d recommend checking with the staff about cross-contamination.

Cafés
3. Das Metta

4. Oh Happy Café
Not entirely gluten-free but recommended by some. They serve gluten free waffles.
5. Café Josefina
Located in Maxvorstadt, this café offers some gluten-free options, though I wouldn’t recommend it for celiacs.
Shops
1. Rewe & Edeka
Rewe and Edeka are high-end supermarkets, and many locations in Munich feature dedicated gluten-free sections. Depending on the size of the store, you might find a variety of products, including frozen gluten-free items like pizza and bread. These are my go-to stores for reliable gluten-free staples.
2. DM

3. Vitalia
Vitalia is a bit pricier but offers an excellent selection of gluten-free products. Some stores even have frozen options like croissants, pain au chocolat, and pizza. If you’re looking for unique or indulgent gluten-free items, Vitalia is a great choice.
4. Superissimo
Superissimo is an Italian supermarket with a gluten-free section that’s perfect for pasta lovers. My favorite gluten-free pasta brand, Rummo, is available here—it’s hands-down the best gluten-free pasta I’ve tried. They also carry amazing gluten-free crackers. Pro tip: Shop on the last Wednesday of the month to get a 15% discount across the store!
5. Bio Supermarkets: Alnatura & VollCorner Bio
These are bio or organic supermarkets that are expensive, but they do have gluten free sections. What I sometimes get from here are special flours or ingredients to bake like brown rice flour, teff flour or psyllium husk, for example.
6. Glutenfrei Geniessen
This specialty gluten-free supermarket in Munich is a dream come true for anyone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. While I haven’t personally visited, I’ve read glowing reviews online. They boast an extensive selection of gluten-free products, from everyday staples to unique finds. Be aware that they’re closed on weekends and have limited weekday hours, so plan accordingly.
I hope this guide helps you explore all the amazing gluten-free options Munich has to offer. Whether you’re craving traditional Bavarian dishes, Italian favorites, or a sweet treat, this city has something for everyone living gluten-free.
